Not an easy task
A case with quite a few challenges: Freight containers from all over the world are available in a wide variety of dimensions and with a wide range of labelling options. Many are very dirty or damaged. In addition, only a few airlines use QR codes for container labelling.

Our smart camera solution with deep learning reads the plain text (OCR) with high process reliability despite these adverse conditions. The vision system is designed for covered outdoor operation and adapted to the climatic conditions (heating in winter, air conditioning in summer).
Lighting conditions mastered
The lighting conditions were difficult: We had to deal with large, highly reflective container surfaces and different working distances. After a number of tests, the decision was made in favour of powerful barlights with polarising filters.
Industrial image processing also simplifies processes in aviation. aerne engineering is developing and producing a vision system for the OCR inspection of freight containers at Zurich Airport for the Swiss aviation company Cargologic.
